UKCBC’s Advisory Board is comprised of various external experts who advise the Board of Directors and Senior Management Team of the College.
Professor Roger King
Formerly Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lincoln, Founding Chair of the Institute for Learning and Teaching (now Higher Education Academy), and now Visiting Professor at the University of Bath and the University of Queensland (Australia), Research Associate at the London School of Economics and Political Science, Co-chair of the Westminster Higher Education Commission, and Author of numerous books and articles on higher education and related issues.
Professor Jane Longmore
Professor Jane Longmore joined Southampton Solent University in November 2007 and was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) in January 2010 with the responsibility for learning, teaching, research and innovation. She is Professor of Urban History and is currently editing a British Academy-funded study of eighteenth-century Liverpool.
She has worked in a wide range of universities across nearly three decades, holding roles in both teaching and academic management. She pursues her interest in pedagogy at a national level through involvement with the Higher Education Academy and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, most recently as a member of the Expert Group advising on the development of the Teaching Excellence Framework. She also sits on the QAA’s Advisory Committee on Degree-Awarding Powers. With a strong commitment to widening educational opportunity, she is a Director of the University Vocational Awards Council. Locally, she serves as Chair of the Standards Committee of Barton Peveril College and as a Trustee of Sport Solent in the Community, as well as the University’s Maritime Trust Fund.
She studied history at the University of Oxford, gained a PCGE from the University of Durham and was awarded her doctorate by the University of Reading. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Her contribution to the promotion and knowledge of history led to the award of an Honorary Fellowship of the Historical Association in 2013.
Professor Michael Philip Thorne CBE, BSc (Hons), PhD, FIMA, FBCS
Professor Thorne retired as Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University in March 2016 and founded its Postgraduate Medical Institute which is behind Anglia Ruskin’s rating in the Times QS rankings as 38th in the UK and which has also led to the establishment of Anglia Ruskin University’s Medical School which opens its doors to students in 2018. He began his university lecturing career at UCL followed by a decade at Cardiff University and thereafter became a Pro Vice Chancellor at the University of Sunderland, Vice Principal (Deputy Vice Chancellor) at Napier University and then Vice Chancellor at the University of East London.
He has a first-class honours degree in Pure Mathematics from Queen Mary University of London and a PhD in Computational Group Theory from the University of Birmingham. He is the author, co-author and editor of a large number of books and has been writer and presenter of more than 100 radio and television programmes for both the BBC and ITV. He has been a member of a number of government committees. He is currently Chair of the Music Therapy Charity and Deputy Treasurer (Vice Chair) of the Sir John Cass Foundation as well as acting as a consultant to a number of universities and colleges. Now that he has retired, one of his major preoccupations has become conducting, especially opera and especially those of Wagner (he has now conducted three complete cycles of Wagner’s Ring) and Strauss.
Dr Elizabeth Halford
Dr Elizabeth Halford is an independent consultant working with universities and colleges in the UK. She was Head of Research and Intelligence at QAA from 2012-16 and was previously a senior manager and academic in higher education, most recently as Head of Validation and Review at the University of West London. She has an EdD from UCL/IOE and has contributed to ESRC research on higher education delivered in diverse settings, presenting and publishing in the UK and internationally on the regulatory challenges of diversity in higher education.
Mr Amarjit Basi
Mr Basi is the CEO and Principal of The Cornwall College Group (TCCG). Before joining TCCG, he was Principal and Chief Executive of New College Nottingham, a founding member of the 157 Group of Colleges, and Principal and Chief Executive of Walsall College.
He has practised as an inspector, chief moderator and consultant on curriculum and quality matters for key national development and quality agencies over the past 20 years. He is currently a Board member at Pearson, the largest learning company in the world, and holds a City & Guilds Fellowship for services to vocational education and training.
Professor Robert Campbell
Professor Campbell has recently retired after five years as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Bolton where he is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy. As Pro Vice-Chancellor, his main responsibility was for the strategic academic development of the University, including quality assurance and enhancement, learning, teaching and research. Prior to that appointment, he was Research Director for the University for four years. As well as being a part of the advisory board for the UK College of Business and Computing, he is currently also the chair of the NHS Advisory Committee on Clinical Excellence Awards for North West; he chairs the Bolton Virtual College for Care Leavers and is a member of the Steering Committee for the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing and a Director of the Centre for Islamic Finance at the University of Bolton.
As a philosopher, his special areas of interest are in applied philosophy, and he has published books and articles on business ethics, legal and social philosophy, and medical ethics. Most recently he has authored a number of articles on health policy. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, the Royal Society of Medicine and the National Forum for Health and Wellbeing.
Mr Glynne Standfield
Partner and head of international education group at Eversheds Sutherland, the UK’s leading law firm in advising education clients. He is recognised in Legal 500 and Chambers guides to the legal profession as a leading education lawyer. He read law at Oxford University and has acted on education related matters since 1992.
He has been involved in many high profile transactions including both sales of the University of Law and the purchase of BPP University (and the recent demerger of its parent Apollo Group). He was the lead lawyer in setting up the Quality Assurance Agency, Office of Independent Adjudicator for Higher Education and the Russell Group. He has also carried out a significant amount of work internationally including the setting up of the University of Newcastle’s Malaysia and Singapore campuses, City University’s Dubai campus and many China joint ventures.
He acted on the obtaining of degree awarding powers and university title for all recent private sector entrants to the UK higher education market.

Dr James Jacob
Director of the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII) and Chairman, International Rubber Research and Development Board (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
Dr. James Jacob has been Vice Chairman of IRRDB for the past five years. He had also served as the Liaison Officer of Physiology Specialist Group of IRRDB. He has been serving as the Director of RRII for the past eight years. A graduate in Agriculture, he has a PhD in Plant Physiology from the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, and another PhD in Biochemistry from Imperial College, London. Before joining RRII, he had worked with the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in the US.
Ms. Yvette Bloxham-Smith
An HR professional with expertise in Shared Services, Resourcing, Business Partnering, Organisational Change, Learning and Development. Her experience spans businesses from the FTSE 250, including Retail, Financial Services, Airline and Leisure businesses, where she has been involved in and taken a lead role in transformational change, service improvement and leading HR professional and customer-facing teams.
